Susannah Heschel &  Tarek El-Ariss: Talking Decently About War & Peace

*Please note: Although the live event has passed, you may still register on this page for access to the video of the event*

On many US campuses, there was turmoil when students tried to learn or teachers tried to teach about the eruption of war between Israel and Gaza. At Dartmouth, NPR reported, two outstanding professors led a decent conversation about deeply  troubling events and values. One was a professor of Jewish studies, Susanna Heschel; the other a professor of Middle Eastern studies, Tarek El-Ariss. On Sunday, January 14, 2024, The Shalom Center brought them together by Zoom for an event with our online community.

Our two remarkable teachers spoke about their work together and took questions from webinar participants, who also had the opportunity on Zoom to meet in small groups to talk warmly and compassionately with each other.

The event honors the legacy of Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel, as we mark his 51st yahrzeit (death anniversary), something the The Shalom Center has done every year since 1998, when we sponsored a world-wide teaching to mark his 25th yahrzeit and again in 2023 for his 50th.

The live event was recorded, and the video may be accessed by completing the registration below.
