Thank you!

Thank you for your support of the Cordoba Center in Lower Manhattan. While the relationship between Jews and Muslims has experienced periods of trouble throughout history (the last 60 years being no exception), it is truly inspiring that there are those amongst us who wish to forge ahead and re-establish the tradition of warm-friendship between Jews and Muslims. I thank you once again for your support. Shalom/Salaam!

An Important Environmental Cause - and Help Needed

As a rabbi and liberal thinker, I’m often inspired and motivated by The Shalom Center’s words and actions. With that in mind, I wanted to share something cool with you and seek your input as to ways to get the word out. As I’m sure you’ve heard, here in the Great Lakes areas, we’re greatly concerned about the Asian Carp getting into our waters and destroying our ecosystem and damaging the economy. It seems to be an issue of national concern that isn’t getting much national priority.

So my 11 year old activist daughter learned about the Asian Carp this Spring and started a petition at her school. The school was great as they brought her to the upper grades to share the issue and get more signatures.

Earlier this week, she gets a call from The Detroit News - they want to do a story. The story runs Tuesday and by the afternoon, PRI’s The Takeaway radio show is calling from NYC. By that night she had set up her on line petition. Yesterday morning she was interviewed. By midday, more newspapers were calling, and now lobbying groups as well, who are thrilled her voice is being heard. Who knows where this will go - though she’s excited to run with it. I guess I’ve fallen into acting press secretary. So do you think this is something The Shalom Center or other groups you are connected with would want to help in getting the word out?

Any suggestions you can make are appreciated and avenues you’d recommend she pursue. Her activism is something innate - that we’ve always been. When I returned a few years back from the Save Darfur Rally in DC, in learning why I was there, she wanted to help. So she took her tzedakah money, bought stamps, affixed them to postcards addressed to President Bush, cards that described what was occurring and asked teachers throughout the school to send the postcards with their names on them.
